Brewing was first mentioned in Neuhaus an der Pegnitz in 1470 and was perhaps unsurprisingly Royal-owned. Prince Bishop Weigand von Redwitz sold it to the town’s citizens for a song in 1522 when he granted them brewing rights, ushering the communal brewing scene which the town is most beloved for in. The Kommunbräu Neuhaus as it was called was renamed Burgbräu Neuhaus in 1958. It was renamed Kaiser-Bräu eight years later due to confusion with neighboring castle breweries. Interestingly, a communal brewer named Josef Laus was the impetus behind its commercialization in 1929. Its in town expansions reached their limits and it moved to the edge of town. Another brewery named Bauer started up in 1892 and became Falkenloch-Brä in 1969. A group of citizen activists formed a Kommunbräu and bought the original old brewery from the town in 1972. It unfortunately proved too expensive to renovate and they ceased using it in 1992, closing down entirely in 1998. At this point, the “communal” beer was brewed at the local Falkenloch-Bräu and shared between three communal brew houses. This was, however, short-lived when Falkenloch-Bräu also shuttered its doors in 2013. Since then, Benaburger/Brunnhuber has its beer contract brewed at Kaiser-Bräu with Dörth/Schaffer and Reindl/Hombauer getting theirs done by Burgbräu Herrsbruck. It appears the latter were at least for a time just getting the wort from Herrsbruck and turning it into beer at their properties.

Kommune Döth (Schaffer)

Burgstraße 4
91284 Neuhaus an der Pegnitz
Temporarily closed/scheduled to reopen in October 2023

Kommune Döth is located in the Haus Schaffer and was one of the original communal brewery outlets. As noted above, the beer was contracted brewed at Burgbräu Herrsbruck up until its closing during COVID. Rumor has it that it will reopen in October of 2023. It would be a nice addition to the town and look forward to visiting if it comes to be.

Kommune Reindl (Hombauer)

Unterer Markt 3
91284 Neuhaus an der Pegnitz
Temporarily/permanently closed

Kommune Reindl was located in Haus Hombauer and was one of the original communal brewery outlets. As noted above, the beer was contracted brewed at Burgbräu Herrsbruck up until its closing during COVID. Interestingly prior to COVID, it looked to have a promising future when two sisters took over the pub and let Pauli Reindl tend to the beer and sausage production. He sadly died in January 2021 at 60 so the future of the pub looks cloudy at best.
