Hopfenhäusla is located in Münchberg, which is in the Hof country of Upper Franconia. There are frequent trains from Hof, a stop on most routes between Bavaria and Saxony. The autobahn between the two passes right through it, as well. It’s about a 1.5 km walk from the station but you go right through town. The last section of the route is quite nice. It’s a pleasant if unremarkable town which you’re not likely to visit unless for the small brewery on its outskirts. I first tried the beers from Hopfenhäusla at the Bavarian Czech beer festival in Rehau.

history & atmosphere
Hopfenhäusla is a very small brewpub with a cozy setting. They have been brewing since 2015. Diplom Braumeister Janes Rieth prides himself on high quality ingredients. The interior is modern but cozy. Tables are nicely spaced. Though the courtyard seating looked more atmospheric, it was closed due to the weather on my visit.

Hopfenhäusla beer
Hopfenhäusla brews a variety of beers, evidently forty different ones since its inception. There are generally at least four on tap at any given time. Along with their use of high quality ingredients, they do not filter their beers. Due to long lagering times, they appear fairly clear. I sampled the Weizen, Helles and Summer Ale. I didn’t get to resample their flagship Bernstein, but I’d had it at a festival in Rehau, where I found out about the brewery.

food
Hopfenhäusla has a limited but well-chosen menu. Owner/brewery Janes is also the chef. As you might guess, there is an emphasis on fresh quality ingredients. With such limited opening hours, dishes change from week to week. I opted for Zanderfilet (pike perch) with potatoes in an herb sauce. I had wanted to try their Treberbrot (spent grain bread) but it only came with cold dishes. My server nicely brought me a piece out to sample.

Service & first impressions
Service was very attentive and friendly. I think I was the only non-local there and was checked on repeatedly. Janes was quite active on the floor, as well. He personally went to each table. He nicely served my second beer in a branded glass when I requested it. It’s certainly a great addition to such a small community. Due to the relative remoteness of the brewpub and its limited opening hours, I’m not likely to return soon. That said, if I am passing though this way by car, I wouldn’t hesitate to stop by for dinner.
