This must be the most idyllic Bierkeller in the world. I’d seen photographs for years but always seemed to be there in off season months and looked at it longingly, hoping to return in summer. I was there once in summer during a thunderstorm, only to find it closed. So, when I finally got there, after walking nearly 20 kilometers from Huppendorf, you can only imagine the elation I felt to finally see it open. Sometimes, when you build things up in your mind, you are bound to be let down but the Griesskeller did not do that in the least. It has it all. A quiet, green leafy location. A cool old half-timbered servery. Beer from gravity dispense. Inexpensive tasty snacks. And a great Kellerbier from their mother brewery, Griess. I can’t wait to go back.

idyllic Griesskeller

I finally got back to enjoy the Griesskeller at a more relaxed pace and had the same Kalterbraten I’d had at their nearby brewery years earlier. It was exactly as we’d rememebered, the best ever.

tasty Kalterbraten, white raddish & a great Kellerbier await you

Beer: Griess Kellerbier from gravity dispense barrel (sadly now regular keg).
