Hohenberg an der Eger
Set on the River Eger, this charming hamlet in the rural outreaches of county Wunsiedel in Upper Franconia is on the Czech border. It’s about as remote as you can get in Franconia but surprisingly reachable by public transportation and a short walk from nearby Schirnding.

Geigel-Bräu history
Geigel-Bräu started brewing in 2022 but the historical property dating back to the 16th century has been in the family for generations. This lovingly done renovation with a focus on tradition dates back to 2015 when the restaurant opened serving Zoigl from Mitterteich. The courtyard just inside the atmospheric Sonnetor entrance is tasteful with lots of space.

the interior
The interior was even more impressive with vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and assorted and quirky in a good way furniture which seemed ill-fitted and yet somehow cohesive in its overall impression. It was empty due the great weather. The best feature of the interior was a gravity barrel sitting on the bar.

the beer & food
With my early arrival, I got a great spot in the corner and due to my limited time, I ordered both beer and food simultaneously. This often throws German servers off but she was happy to save a trip. The hop forward Geigel Bräu Hausbier arrived with a good head and it was obvious they cared about their presentation. My meal of pork medallions with Spätzle was lovely.

the service
Service was very friendly, efficient and attentive. It was unproblematic to pay with a card but as is typical in smaller restaurants, you have to go inside to do so. That’s when I actually spotted the gravity barrel. My server was very happy when I gave her a cash tip before leaving, and she deserved it. Despite both amazing beer and food, it’s unlikely this will become a standard trip due to how remote it is. I’m nevertheless super happy I made the effort and hope to return one day.
Beers on tap: Geigel-Bräu Hausbier, Notthalft Pils
