Opening hours:

I didn’t see any listed hours but since they not only have rooms and were open on a day when nothing else in town was, my guess is they have quite friendly hours. It’s always best to call ahead but this was not a planned stop. Hours below are from Google Maps. If correct, get there early for dinner!

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 9:00 to 18:00
Wednesday & Saturday 9:00 to 14:00
Closed on Sunday

This little Gasthaus on the far north side of town has a classic Thüringen gray slate facade and excellent food. There are two small dining areas inside, one of which is apparently still used for smokers. The courtyard area is pleasant if the weather is nice. Though not on our radar prior to visiting Kalternnordheim, it was a welcome site as it was the only place open.

enjoying a meal in the Biergarten

Though the menu said Rhöner Pils was on tap (confirmed by our server), along oddly with Warsteiner Pils, the beer that came out looked nothing like the Rhöner Pils we’d just had at the the local Heiratsmarkt. I asked again and she found out that it was indeed their Landbier. I’d just drunk a bottle at the brewery and this beer, though it looked the same, was in awful shape.  The Roulade I ordered, however, was maybe the best I’ve ever had and I’d had a great one only two days earlier. I’d gladly eat there again if in town and would also drink the Rhöner beer if for no other reason than to support the local product, and hope it fared better.

It’s a shame that a commercial beer like Warsteiner takes over from the excellent local Pils and even sadder that the locals there having a post Festival party of their own, all drank it rather than their local beer. That said, the local beer was indeed in bad form at best. Still, if people drank it, that would likely not be the case as uniformly all the bottles I’ve had were very good.

Beers: Rhöner Landbier Premium & Warsteiner Pils on tap.
