Eichstätt

Until 1972, Eichstätt was part of Middle Franconia but it was incorporated into Upper Bavaria for “administrative” reasons.  Since that was only 50 years ago and first mention of the settlement dates to 740, I’m going to include it in my Franconian listings. It’s a pleasant town easily reached by public transportation from both Munich and Nürnberg so a day trip is possible from either. The fortress Willibaldsburg overlooks the town and along with the cathedral in the old town center, constitutes the main tourist attractions in town. Situated in the scenic Altmühltal, there is no shortage of natural beauty in its surroundings.

the charming town of Eichstätt

From a beer perspective, the reason to make your way here is the large regional brewery Hohfmühl. It’s nearby the fortress but isn’t particularly set up for tourist visits. I tried to stop by both by getting off the train a stop early but found the brewery inaccessible from there so hopped back on quickly. There’s no tap at the brewery but there is one in town which is part of a hotel. If looking to explore the area more fully, I would imagine it’s the place to stay.
