Drossenfelder Bräuwerk in Neudrossenfeld is a lovingly restored old inn with renewed brewing purpose. It’s well worth a visit if on the way between Kulmbach and Bayreuth or if using either as a base.

Drossenfelder Bräuwerk history
Though there is a castle brewing tradition dating back to 1649, it was dormant for an indeterminate length of time. Thankfully, the municipality decided to renovate the entire estate with the concept of bringing its brewing heritage back. This all came to fruition in 2013. The gorgeously restored pub oozes cozy in an Old World dark wood way.

the Biergarten, beer & food
It was too nice a day so their surprisingly large but charming Biergarten was the obvious choice. It was early in the season and just after opening on a weekend so we had to fetch our own beers inside. The barman was nonetheless friendly and later brought the beers out. The food menu looked inviting but we’d already eaten a hardy lunch. I started off with their season Hexenwerck which was described as a Märzen but on their site it now is labeled an India Red Lager, which seems closer to the taste. I also tried their Keller Pils and a friend tried their Nachtwerk, which she liked once we viewed as a Kellerbier. Names aside, they were traditional styles with a certain Craft Beer flair.

the charming Biergarten & tasty beer
In addition to the great looking good, I also noted on their website there are quite a few seasonal beers so a great reason to return regularly to Drossenfelder Bräuwerk.
