Der Biersepp is the current unofficial brewery tap of Brauerei Schlappeseppel. With its Aschaffenburg Old Town location, it is the best place to sample an array of the former local brewery.

Brauerei Schappeseppel history
Brauerei Schappeseppel officially dates back to 1803, but there’s fair evidence that brewing took place at the old Schlossgase address as early as 1795. The somewhat convoluted story of a wounded soldier with a limp (Schlappeseppel) appears to be myth. So, the 1631 start up date attached to it is more about the town than the brewery itself. The Eder & Heylands Brauerei bought it up in 1999, but the previous owning family retained the original brewpub building. Perhaps even more sadly, the former brewery stopped serving Schappeseppel beer despite confusingly and a bit deceptively keeping the name. They have been serving Faust beer from Miltenberg since 2011.

Gaststätte Schappeseppel
Der Biersepp
Der Bierepp started up about a year later with the intent of bringing the Schlappeseppel beers back to the Schlossgasse, even if a few doors up the street. It’s a very traditional restaurant with a lovely wood interior and tasteful decorations adding to the homey atmosphere. There’s a stone vaulted cellar for larger parties.

Schlappeseppel beers on tap
Der Biersepp serves a full range of Schlappeseppel beers, both on tap and from bottles. It was our first stop in town, and lunch, so I only had a chance to have three of the beers on tap but the Schlappeseppel Pils, Export and Kellerbier were all well-poured and in good shape. While not ground-breaking beers, they were all certainly tasty and well-made.

Der Biersepp food
Der Biersepp has a good size menu that concentrates on what they call Bavarian classics, but there are a few salad options. I opted for the Hackbraten, which came with Bratkartoffeln. It was hearty and very tasty. It was perfect for the day ahead drinking I had planned. My wife got the calves liver, and said it was excellently prepared. Sometimes when it is a special dish, it can be chancy but it was on the regular menu and not inexpensive. So, she rightly figured it would be quite good.

a lovely lunch at Der Biersepp
Our first visit to Der Biersepp was a resounding success. While I wouldn’t go all the way to Aschaffenburg just to drink the Schappeseppel beers, I would certainly eat here the next time I am in town. With all the town has to offer, I think that is a near certainty.
Beers on tap at Der Biersepp: Schlappeseppel Export, Schlappeseppel Pils, Schlappeseppel Kellerbier & Schlappeseppel Hefeweizen. Bottled: Schlappeseppel Urbräu Dunkel, Schlappeseppel Helles, Schlappeseppel Dunkles Hefeweizen, Schlappeseppel Seppelsche & alcohol free Schlappeseppel Hefeweizen.
