Brauhaus Budenschuster

Brauhaus Budenschuster is a small brewery located in Bad Steben. As the name suggests, Bad Steben is a spa town that lies in the Hof county of Upper Franconia. I did not have time to visit the spa but I can highly recommend visiting this artisanal brewery. Bad Steben is easy to reach by regular trains from Hof in around 45 minutes. Hof is on the line between Bavaria and Saxony.

the history

Brauhaus Budenschuster was founded in 2017 by two long time friends. As with most things, the story starts far earlier. After meeting at a vocational school in Ulm, they moved to Berlin to seriously study brewing. After receiving their degrees, they separate to hone their skills in various breweries. One had roots in Bad Steben, and a family farmhouse called Budenschuster. With a lot of work, the two converted it first into a brewery and then into a pub.

the atmosphere

Brauhaus Budenschuster has a lovely outside seating area. The pub interior is quite cozy but even on a less than perfect day, everyone was sitting outside. There was a handful of locals in the small back courtyard, but I sat along the edge in a long narrow area full of tables. The view of their metal sign was great for photos. One of the owners was busy brewing but still aptly pouring beers. He probably wondered how I’d stumbled across the place but warmed up to me after I drank a few beers.

Brauhaus Budenschuster brews a flagship Lager, an incredible amber brew which you wish you could get closer to home. In addition, they have one seasonal on tap. It was a Weizen when I was there. I’ll admit to being a bit disappointed by the style, but after one sip, I was more than happy to have another. They have some simple cold snacks on their menu, but a friend who goes regularly says he’s never seen them have anything. I was happy I brought some pretzels with me, as when I asked about Obatzn, he looked at me like it was a silly question. There are two bakeries fairly close, including one at the train station. It’s perfectly allowed to bring your own food.

It was quite a trip to get here from Bamberg, but I can’t wait to go back. Next time, I’ll bring more snacking supplies and hope for the Dunkel to be the seasonal.
