The Brauereigaststätte Ochsen is the place to eat in Ballenberg and not just because it’s the only place. Though I just had a small cold plate, I saw plenty of great looking roasts being served. It is also one of the very few places to serve Spall beer. In fact, it’s possible it’s the only place to drink it. It was a gorgeous day and I got there just as it opened so I nabbed a primo spot outside. I started off with a Keller Pils and enjoyed the sun.

I made sure to order some food quickly as I just knew it would get busy. I’d been eating pretty heavily the previous few days and a large roast meal wasn’t in my plans. I’d read about a Schwäbisch dish called Ochsenmaulsalat, which is thinly sliced meat from the mouth of an ox. It’s tossed with raw onions with oil and white vinegar, hence the salad moniker. It sounds weird but it was actually quite good and particularly nice on a warm summer day. I washed it down with a second Keller Pils and then moved onto their Spallator, a rich dark Doppelbock.

a local dish: Ochsenmaulsalat & Spall Bock

My server was quite friendly but as it got busier, I saw her less and less. When I went in to get my bill and one more Bock, I saw how crowded it was inside and understood her lack of attention. I noticed they had small 5 liter party kegs of both beers but as much as I’d have liked to get at least one, I didn’t feel like carting it back on the bus, followed by numerous trains to Munich.

l’d certainly come back here again for a larger meal but it’s not likely to be anytime soon. It’s not exactly close to home, hard to reach by public transportation and is only open for lunch on Sunday. So, I’ll say it was worth the trip but perhaps only this one time unless I can prearrange a tour or have a willing designate driver!

Beers: Spall Keller Pils, Spall Spallator.
