History of Brauerei Weller:
Brauerei Weller was founded in 1811. It had gone through many transformations before ceasing brewing 100 years later. The current operation started in 2011 with a call for private investors to bring the historical brewery back to a town once renowned for beer. Initially all beers were contract brewed. There is now a small brewing kit in the Thalermühle which only produces enough beer for members of the cooperative. There is an interesting and hopeful curtain depicting what the brewery will look like once funding is complete. So, the the current beers available to the public are by Göller in Zeil am Main according to old recipes supplied.

They gorgeously restored and opened the Thalermühle restaurant in 2013. It has a very traditional decor and the Biergarten out back is leafy and atmospheric as well.

There is service in the Biergarten but you have to order at the bar inside. Servers bring meals and you bring your beer out when ordering. I tried both of the “house” beers, Paul Weller’s 3×11 and Jean Paul, which were good if unremarkable. The real star of the lunch was the meal itself, Geschnittene Klöße, leftover potato dumplings fried with eggs.
Service was good as was the food and atmosphere. I would return for a meal but not for the beer in itself . So unless I hear they are serving their own beer in the future, it’s not a place I’d rush back to. That said, they are very transparent about the contract brewing nature of the current operation. If you’re in Erlangen, it’s certainly a place to consider for a fine meal.
