Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla history

Zum Gründla was first mentioned in 1810 as part of the local post office, where drinks were served. The Pittroff family took the reigns in 2003 and have expanded and improved on a continuing basis. The Metzdorfer beers were initially contract brewed by Hübner of Steinfeld. They started building the Metzdorfer Hausbrauerei in 2014, enlarging the property to allow for fermentation and storage. The first batches were ready for consumption in 2015. They regularly brew two staple beers and an occasional seasonal.

Zum Gründla atmosphere

Though not far from Kulmbach, Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla is very much a country inn, complete with the accompanying warm welcome. Village pubs can be a little daunting to outsiders but this was certainly not the case here. The main pub area isn’t very big but homey. I got there right at the opening and noticed nearly all of the tables were reserved. Within an hour, it was full and bustling. It was such a nice day that I sat in the small Biergarten out front. The tree was still bare in early April but I’m sure in summer, it provides great shade. If sitting outside, you go in for your drinks and to order food. The latter is brought out to you so remember your table number.

Metzdorfer Hausbrauerei beers

Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla serves two regular beers, both unsurprisingly unfiltered. Their flagship Metzdorfer Edeltrunk is an amber Vollbier. The Metzdorfer Hopfentrunk is a Keller Pils. Both were incredibly dry and super drinkable. Süffig is the perfect adjective.

Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla food

Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla is very much an eatery as much as a brewery. Franconian home cooking is the theme with great value meals an understatement. Their basic menu is on their website but there are daily specials and Sunday roasts. For those with a smaller appetite, there are cold snacks which are surprisingly big, as well. Interestingly, they offer food to go often at even lower prices than when served onsite. I’d had a big lunch so opted for the daily cold special of Tellersülze mit Bratkartoffeln. This was very much homemade from leftover cold roast pork, preserved in jelly in a dish. It gets flipped onto a plate with the potatoes. It was excellent quality and ample, especially for the price.

This was certainly an example of a place not only living up to expectations but exceeding them. I hope to return soon and I can highly recommend making you way out there if you’re in the Kulmbach area.

Beers on tap at Gasthausbrauerei Zum Gründla: Metzdorfer Edeltrunk & Metzdorfer Hopfentrunk plus an occasional seasonal beer. Beers are available in 1-liter swing-top bottles with a very reasonable deposit.
