Brauhaus zu Coburg atmosphere
Brauhaus zu Coburg was founded in approximately 2011. That was around a ten years after the last brewery in the once brewing proud town closed. The decor is traditional dark wood with some nice modern touches. Never underestimate the value of a few flowers. Servers are Tracht clad, friendly and efficient. There are some show copper kettles on display but the actual brewery is adjacent to the restaurant with the kettles on visible through large windows.

Veste Trunk beer
Brauhaus zu Coburg has a surprising assortment of beers. Their Veste Trunk Special is brewed entirely in house while their Veste Trunk Zwickl or Kellerbier is brewed according to their recipe by another small regional Franconian brewery. In addition to the two stablemates, there is a fair array of beers from Kulmbacher.

Brauhaus zu Coburg food
The fair size menu is unsurprisingly heavy on meat dishes but there are a couple of vegetarian friendly options. If hungry, a roast with a rich sauce is the way to go, especially if you’d like to try the local version of Koße. Known as Knödl in southern Bavaria, the Coburger variety is quite soft and wet. In fact, their dialect name is Rutscher, or slider. They do, in fact, look like they just might slide off your plate. Though not my favorite, I am a stickler for trying local foods. Once I got used to them, I found they did do a great job of soaking up the sauce. Rinderoulade is another dish the area is known for and this was a tasty one. There was ample sauce but the Rutscher sure did their job. I still needed a second Zwickl to polish it off.

Beers on tap at Brauhaus zu Coburg:
Veste Trunk Spezial, Veste Trunk Zwickl (Kellerbier). Kulmbacher beers on tap are Mönchshof Landbier Hell, Kapuziner Weißbier, Sturm Pils plus one rotating.
Their sister pub, Brauhaus Stadl, is next door and is only open in the evening. Conversely, Brauhaus zu Coburg is only open during the day. There is an odd half hour gap when the two are open.
