History of Der Schwarzer Bär
Schwarzer Bär is one of the oldest buildings in Weissenburg, dating back to 1528. It is perhaps the oldest of the three original breweries but sadly ceased brewing in 1906. Rock cellars below are proof of its importance in maturing beer in medieval times. It went through various incarnations, even as the old cinema Metropol, before returning to a guesthouse.

the atmosphere & food
Schwarzer Bär is a cozy old style Franconian restaurant with some nice touches. As part of a hotel, the staff is attentive and guest-oriented. My server was busy but always found time to check on my needs. The menu wasn’t overly large but well thought out and included all of the Franconian favorites. I had a lovely half duck. The portion was ample and perfectly cooked. The dumpling was obviously homemade and Blaukraut tasty.

beers from local Brauerei Pröls
Brauerei Pröls took over the Schneider-Bräu facility, adjacent to Zur Kanne. It is unclear if they are currently brewing the Schneider beers for Zur Kanne, as well. One thing that that is for sure is they have brought some hope into the brewing tradition of this once proud brewery-rich town. Happily, Schwarzer Bär features three of their beers on tap. The two standards are the Helles Export and Dunkel. On my visit, they still had their Martini Bock, a rich Dunkler Doppelock, on too. All three were quite good and I look forward to sampling more on future visits.

From the Pröls website, I see quite a few seasonal beers including a Heller Bock so I would guess they would be featured at Der Schwarzer Bär. This coupled with the great food and charming town is a good reason to pay a visit. I’m sure I will more often now too.
Beers on tap: Pröls Helles Export and Pröls Dunkel plus one Pröls seasonal beer such as their Martini Bock.
Bottled beer: Pröls Pils, Pröls Hefeweizen.
Bottled beer from out of town: Hofmühl Hell Alkoholfrei, Hofmühl Leicht, Hofmühl Hefeweizen Leicht, Hofmühl Hefeweizen Alkoholfrei, Hofmühl Radler.
