Max-Bräu Gastwirtschaft atmosphere:
Max-Bräu Gastwirtschaft is a cozy atmospheric pub in Ampferbach. Though not far from Bamberg as the crow flies, limited public transportation combined with the late opening hours makes it a tough place to visit. A friend willing to drive makes it a lot easier. The quirky but homey decor sets the tone as soon as you walk in the door. Servers are welcoming and friendly IF you can get a spot in the small and obviously popular place.
Max-Bräu Gastwirtschaft: quirky and homey
The food and beer:
Max-Bräu Gastwirtschaft has a simple menu and seem noted for their Max-Hähnchen, a roasted chicken with various spices. This is unfortunately not available on Tuesdays, the day of our visit. My friends opted for their Schnitzel sandwich but I had eaten a rather large lunch so the Fleischküchle sounded more enticing and easier to attack. The option of getting one or two made it even more so. It came with Bratkartofeln and a small tasty salad, garnished with pomegranate seeds. This was a nice touch that didn’t go unnoticed by my wife. Their beer follows a bit of a confusing process. They brew the wort is at Zehendner in nearby Mönchsambach according to their own recipe. They bring it to their Keller and pub in the village, where they pitch the yeast. It is lagered there after fermentation is finished and served directly from the tanks. It was excellent.
a gorgeous Kellerbier & tasty Fleischküchle
In the warmer months, they close the pub and open their Max-Bräu Keller on the edge of the village. I can highly recommend both but that comes with the caveat of it being tough to reach by public transportation. The people are friendly and welcoming. The quality of the beer and food is excellent.
