First mentioned in 1076, Gößweinstein is now located in the Forchheim county of Upper Franconia. Nestled in the foothills of Franconian Switzerland on the Wiesent river, it attracts outdoor enthusiasts with numerous hiking and biking trails emanating from it. There are several viewpoints of the town’s admitted stunning skyline, which you can reach by short if somewhat steep paths. These include the Kreuzberg and Gernerfels.

Sights & logistics
Gößweinstein has its share of charming sites including a hilltop namesake castle and impressive Basilica with an ornate baroque interior. There is also quite an assortment of half-timbered houses typical of the region. Though there aren’t any breweries, there are a few restaurants and cafes as well as some places to spend the night. It’s most easily accessed by bus from either Ebermannstadt or Pegnitz and it’s also easy enough to reach similar towns such as Pottenstein, where there are some breweries to enjoy the typical dark beers of the area. Brauerei Mager is of particular note and offers accommodation and excellent food.

Suggested beer hike
For the beer hiker, there is no better destination than the Sachsenmühle Biergarten. There are a few trails but the 5.5 km trail which takes in the Gößweinstein Castle is particularly scenic and and isn’t overly strenuous. Once you climb to the castle, it’s all downhill. The lush route offers good shade and follows the Wiesent River and old rail line once you descend. Unfortunately, regular train service ceased for economic reasons and increased car traffic. There is an old tourist steam train that plies the route in summer but the bus is more useful with a stop quite close to the atmospheric Sachsenmühle.
