Kommunbrauhaus Junkersdorf (an der Weisach)

Junkersdorf an der Weisach lies in the Haßberg county of Lower Franconia and was likely settled in the late 8th century. It is a small village with only a handful of notable buildings including a half-timbered town hall. The Lutheran church has an unusual partial half-timbered tower as well. It has a lovely setting on the Weisach River.

Of course the reason for those with a beer inclination to pay a visit is the communal brewery which only occasionally holds events open to the public. I was lucky enough to be on hand for the Kerwa in October 2024 and again for their May 1st 2025 Fest.

History

Kommunbrauhaus Junkersdorf was built in the mid-1800s. The single story sandstone structure fell into disrepair. It was thankfully a protected monument so it was purchased and restored by a small private investment group in 1994. Brewing resumed onsite in 1998. It is generally only available within the community outside of small and infrequent festivals. I first tried their beer at the BR Radtour 2024 and most of us felt it was the best of show.

Junkersdorf Kerwa 2024

I was lucky to not only see a post on Instagram about the Kerwa in October 2024 but also to have a friend who belongs to a neighboring communal brewery. Since he was planning on attending, I got invited.  While it was a public event and surely anyone who stopped by would be welcome, it would have been a bit intimidating just popping in without some kind of connection. That said, I felt very welcome and enjoyed the very local affair. It seemed we were the only ones not from the village there.

The beers & food

I was sad to hear their Hausbier wasn’t available but tucked into a quite hop forward Weizen which was quite good. As is often the case, the only food available was Bratwurst but they are generally of such high quality, no one can complain. These locally made ones fit the bill well. Their new Helles Vollbier was not the best but certainly interesting to try. Beers can vary at these small communal breweries, especially when they experiment with their recipes and try different styles. All that said, a visit to one is a special peek into a brewing culture which most won’t have a chance to experience.

May 1st Fest 2025

With a lot of Fests going on for the May 1st weekend, Junkersdorf an der Weisach was a must go. We got there very early due to two more on our agenda so it was pretty quiet!

May 1st fest early morning

They brewed a Maibock for the occastion so it was even more enticing. One sip and and we nearly decided to stay put but two communal breweries in Hildburghausen county of Thüringen were having fests too.

If this Maibock is any indication, I’d love to head to their next Fest.

Beers: Hausbier, Helles Vollbier, Weizen, Maibock.
