There has been brewing at this location since 1770 and it’s been run by the Thomann family since 1870. The restaurant was run by another family for some time but the Thomann’s have taken it back over and seem to be doing a fine job with it. The outside area was full on the Thursday of my lone visit so we sat in the cozy pub resplendent with a green tiled oven.

I went with a friend who’d driven me out. He’d had bad experiences with their beer in the past but hadn’t been there in a few years so when I told him about the family taking the pub back over, he offered to head out with me. We both were impressed with the Zwickel. From memory, he remembered the old beer being a Dunkel, and not a good one at that. Since the beer was good, we stayed for another and I got the the cold sliced Schweinebraten.

I’d waited quite some time to get to this little place with less than friendly hours but I’d happily return, probably more often if they had weekend hours or I lived 3.5 hours closer!

a new for me beer & meal
Well, they are still only open during the week but I did get a place closer and finally made it out once again. In the interim, I’d had a bottled beer called Kellerteufel which seemed to be the same as the Zwickel I’d had on the previous visit. I got to try not only the Chef’s Weizen but also their Füchsla, a Crafty “rotes” Märzen. I opted for the Hausmacherplatte and it was excellent as well.
