In season
Schumannskeller was established in 1873 by the Schuhmann family, who also own the local Brauerei Zur Sonne. This atmospheric Keller is a popular summer meeting spot. Run by the Weiss family since 2014, it’s noted for for its food as much as its lush surroundings and Sonne Bier.

The beer and food
I’d wanted to come to this Keller since our lone visit to the brewery in winter of 2005, So, I was happy to finally make it there in summer of 2021. It was a short stop but I got a feel for the lush surroundings. I’d come after eating at another brewery so unfortunately didn’t get a chance to sample their food. I did, however, drink a beer in the cool shade on a hot day, certainly a contributing factory to their popularity.

I returned a few times in 2024, once to have a meal with my wife. We both had a Schweinesteak mit Kochkäse (pork steak with a melted cheese on top) with a salad. The beer was in excellent form.

Bockbieranstich 2024
Their Bockbieranstich was high on my list so was glad to finally make it in 2024. The Bock was one of the best of that season. I only had a pretzel but again, one of the best I’ve had in Franconia. It was such a good Anstich, I returned in 2025. I was super happy to see a wooden gravity barrel. It was free beer as well, and who doesn’t like free beer. I met up with some good friends and that’s what these events are all about.

If visiting in the cooler months, the Keller is closed so be sure to visit the brewery’s restaurant on the main street of Bischberg.
