Würgau is right in the heart of the northern part of Franconian Switzerland so there are numerous trails emanating from it and even better, most of them go to small regional breweries. Of course, the best part is you can stay right at another regional brewery and a bus will drop you right out front if you time things right.

Founded in 1550, this family run enterprise seemed to do everything well but evidently brewing their own beer became too much or perhaps concentrating on the hotel/restaurant became a priority. A large traditional restaurant serves excellent food to a mix of locals and beer tourists. With a full portfolio of beers on tap. With rooms upstairs, it’s a good choice for an overnight stop. The Schesslitzer Bierwanderweg takes in Schesslitz and a Bierkeller off the beaten path.
We went here from Bamberg on one of my many birthday excursions my wife is so kind to accompany me on. Being December, good hot food is a priority and if that’s good, she’s usually pretty happy. Brauerei Hartmann didn’t disappoint. We both had a very perfectly done duck breast. The skin was crispy and the meat moist. The sauce was homemade and full of rich duck fat. What more could you want? Oh, I had their slightly smoky Felsentrunk, an amber beauty that went well with the meal and my wife had the Erbachänk, a roasty dark brew. I had a dark Bock for dessert. Their beers are not the driest in the region but go well with their food. It’s not overly hard to get there from Bamberg but you have to time your bus going back or spend the night!
