Unterneuses

Unterneuses is a small unremarkable village that wouldn’t draw your attention if it weren’t for its fine small country brewery. Part of the Ebensfeld postal code, it is equally close to the Bad Staffelstein as well as noted local attractions like Kloster Banz, Vierzehnheiligen and the Staffelberg. It’s a fine area for hiking and with so many nearby breweries, it’s a prime one for beer hiking. Since the small brewpub in town offers accommodation, it makes a great base to explore from.

Founded in 1868, this was once a one man Martin show with the brewer acting as butcher and chef. With the strain and advancing years, it’s little wonder it closed in 2014. Luckily, the brewery just across the road from the restaurant resumed operations in 2017 with Martin back at the helm. The restaurant is being run by a family member who continues with house-butchered meats and local delicacies.

cozy interior of Gasthof Martin & their legendary Vollbier

I arrived just after its opening on a very hot summer day. All of the shady spots were already taken and with COVID-19 restriction is force, I’d assumed the interior wasn’t open. I sat in a fairly warm spot despite a small umbrella fighting a losing battle against the sun. So, I had a couple of their marvelous Vollbiers and got on my way. The food looked great and pretty much everyone but me was eating even though it was early by German standards. When I used the restroom, I saw that people were sitting inside. I thought about moving and eating there but I still had two more stops and more walking to do. Hope to return on a cooler day to enjoy a meal there.
