Unterelldorf Brauhaus is located in its small namesake village nestled in the rural outskirts of Seßlach, in the Coburg county of Upper Franconia. Only 15 km from Coburg, regular buses ply the route to Seßlach but you’ll have to walk from there. It’s a pretty 3.5 kilometer stroll. This is best done for the Unterelldorf Braufest in August.

a scenic stroll to Unterelldorf
Unterelldorf was first mentioned in 1290 and changed ownership numerous times. It has remained small with only a handful of noted buildings including a former church and of course, the communal brewery which brought us here in the first place. There are some charming slate-tiled houses along the route, too.

History of Unterelldorf Brauhaus
Unterelldorf Brauhaus was founded in 1848. Residents of the village had brewing rights and this tradition is now carried out by a brewing club called the Brautraditionsverein Unterelldorf. They completely renovated the brewery along with the attached bakery in 2012. For their efforts, the group received one of six Bavarian state prizes in 2017. It also called the Bürgersolarbrauhaus as it’s completely solar-powered. In fact, it creates 6000 KW of clean electricity per year. The interior was easily accessible during the Braufest.

Unterelldorf Braufest 2026
Unterelldorf Brauhaus is not generally open to the public. All beer brewed is for member consumption. They hold an annual Braufest in August and while not well-publicized, it’s not so hard to find out the exact date. Members were welcoming and and it was a well-organized event. The layout of tables with nice floral arrangements gave it a real family atmosphere and it was anything but a guys beer fest. There was no token system so paying for beer/food was easy and quite reasonable. The Bratwurst cooking area was far enough away from the seating, important once the smoke starts building up!

Unterelldorf Brauhaus Hausbrauerbier
The Hausbrauerbier from Unterelldorf Brauhaus was a rustic low carbonation brew. It was quite hop forward but I found it had fair malt backbone. This in no way took away from its dry and quite bitter character.

Unterelldorf Braufest food
Along with the ubiquitous (but super tasty) Bratwurst the area is renowned for, they had some great cold items. I was happy to see that some of them were small, so I could snack around a bit. The Bratwurst is of the coarse variety and served in a top cut roll, known as Protestant style.

Backhaus cakes
As previously mentioned, they renovated the Backhaus, as well. This was easily as big an attraction as the beer. I was glad I’d ordered the cheese cake fairly early on. My friend tried later to no avail. It was very traditional, thin and shaped a bit like a pizza.

the bakery was very popular
I quite enjoyed the Unterelldorf Braufest. The members were even more friendly after a few of my friends showed up, who are also members of communal breweries. As is often the case, it’s not what you know, it’s who.

These places are generally closed to the public so the best way to visit them is to find out when they have an event. The next one on the calendar is the Köslauer Rennweg Brauer Bockbieranstich on September 19th 2026.
