Poppenhausen Brauhaus is a small private communal brewery. It’s located in Poppenhausen, a small village nestled in the largely rural Hildburghausen county of Thuringia. It’s literally just across the border from Franconia and is part of the Fränkischer Reichskreis, hence its inclusion here.

History
With a brewing tradition dating back to 1725, the current communal brewery traces back to 2003. These are not commercial enterprises so more small clubs where members brew and enjoy their own beer.

The festival
They hold one or two events each year which are not advertised. It’s a word of mouth kind of thing so I was happy when a good friend who’s also a member of a communal brewery invited me along. These are small village affairs but they are well-organized. Along with the local beers from Poppenhäuser Brauhaus, they had tasty Bratwurst typical of Thuringia.

enjoying the local Beers & Brats
Beers on tap: Poppenhäuser Hell & Dunkel.
Similar beer experiences: Köslauer Rennweg Brauer and Bräuhaus Dörflis.
These places are generally closed to the public so the best way to visit them is to find out when they have an event. The next one on the calendar is the Köslauer Rennweg Brauer Braufest on May 24th & 25th in 2025.
