Himalaya Indian Food is an excellent Indian restaurant which has taken over the lease of the much beloved but defunct Café Abseits. They thankfully have continued the tradition of serving a great assortment of regional Franconian beers on tap.

It was a sad day when the legendary Café Abseits, one of Bamberg’s original beer bars, closed its doors. There was a rumor circling immediately that not only would an Indian restaurant open in its place but that they would keep their focus on having great beer on tap. It sounded too good to be true but it is. True, that is.

I finally got a chance to check it out Himalaya Indian Food in the spring of 2024 when I stopped by for the lunch buffet at only 12.20€. It was quite good but as you might imagine, one dish was very mild and the second was spicier but still a notch lower than you might like if you like ”hot” stuff. Still, great value and enjoyable, especially since I could wash it town with Mönchsambacher Lager. It and the Huppendorfer Vollbier I followed it with, were both well-poured and in appropriate logo glasses. The regular menu was extensive and probably cheaper than similar restaurants more in the center.

The owner was friendly and attentive. We returned in spring 2025 and enjoyed a great meal in the Biergarten out back. They not only had their usual line-up but also Mönchsambacher Maibock on tap! It’s nice when things work out in the face of tough odds.
