Hexenhäusle is located in Michelau im Steigerwald-Neuhausen. As the name suggests, it’s in the beautiful Steigerwald. It’s also in the Schweinfurt country of Lower Franconia. The most straight forward approach is via Haßfurt to Gerolzhofen. From there, you can use Call Heinz to prearrange a ride to Neuhausen. If going on Sundays or holidays between May 1st and October 3rd, you can use the Freizeitbus from Haßfurt. This bus will bring you to a number of small villages close enough to hike in and out. I used Untersteinbach from a friend’s suggestion. I hiked in and out from there but there are plenty of other options.

What is the Hexenhäusle?
Hexenhäusle dates back to around the year 1700. Evidently, the last private inhabitants were two old women with three cats. After their passing, it was lovingly restored and opened as the Neuhäuser Brotzeitstübla in 1985. It was another COVID causality, closing at the end of 2022. Thankfully, homebrewer Johannes Frieß decided to make his dream come true by converting the lovely witch’s house into the very small Hexenbräu microbrewery in 2023. The 50L system is on display within the atmospheric old inn.

Hexenbräu
Hexenbräu has a small capacity so unsurprisingly, their beers are only available onsite. In addition to the atmospheric inn, there is a lovely Biergarten out front. Set right in the forest, it’s a cool place on a hot summer day. The exterior of the Hexenhäusle is every bit as captivating as the interior. Seating is spacious and comfortable, as well.

Hexenbräu beers
Hexenbräu beers are small batch brews with a Craft Beer twist. I still found both very much Franconian tasting in a nice rustic way. The brewer/owner is passionate about his beer and was curious to get my opinion. He brews a few different beers but it appears the Hexenbräu Zauber is his flagship. This unfiltered amber Kellerbier was a thirst quencher. The other beer available the day of my visit was an unfiltered Pils, which I think I liked a notch more.

a great meal at Hexenhäusle
Hexenhäusle food
Hexenhäusle offers a small changing warm menu as well as a few Brotzeit options. Vegetarian choices are available as well. I was quite hungry so went for the Jägerschnitzel, which was ample and managed the tough task of keeping the breading on the pork crispy under the fairly heavy and mushroom laden sauce. It was fairly priced and quite satisfying. There were also a few cakes on offer but I was much too full to fit one in.
looking forward to a return
It was a great first visit to Hexenhäusle. Refreshingly, the owner responded promptly to my e-mails prior to the visit. This is helpful as you don’t want to go so far and show up to a full or even worse, closed venue. I was warmly welcomed on arrival and promptly brought a beer, which was well-poured. My meal came out quickly, too. You easily could see the couple enjoy hosting, as they chatted with obvious regulars. When I arrived, the whole family was enjoying lunch but I was served quickly nonetheless. I would love to return again, hopefully for their Bockbier in November. If venturing out, please consult their website about current opening hours and potential holidays. This is the owners’ hobby, so you’ll have to forgive their not being open more often.
Hexenhäusle beers on tap: Hexenbräu Zauber appears to be the flagship. There was also their Hexenbräu Pils on tap when I was there.
