Dietzhof

Dietzhof has a long and fairly illustrious history for such a small village, a home to royals in its earliest days and a playground for rich young law students in a less distant time period. What remains is a town sprinkled with some half-timbered houses, one of which is its renowned Brauerei Alt. To bring things full circle, within the barn out back of the brewery are the remnants of the vaulted ceilings of the former castle home of the town’s long deceased blue blood residents. With its close proximity to the twin-peaked flattish Walberla and numerous hiking trails traversing and circumnavigating it, Dietzhof is a popular stopping off point.

Founded in 1886, Brauerei Alt had eluded me for many years due to its lack of daylight opening hours. Unless you’re there on a Sunday, you’re looking at an evening visit. I was happy to recently spend a few days in nearby Leutenbach for the Walberlafest, knowing I would be able to finally make my way to this much beloved brewpub. Despite the festival being in full swing on a Saturday evening, we walked into a packed pub. We managed to get a couple seats and basked in the coziness of the timeless old place. With a low wood-beamed ceiling and green tile oven, it was just what we needed on the colder than typical May evening. It was bustling and you could just feel people felt happy to be there.

Alt Vollbier Dunkel and a great mixed meat plate

We quickly ordered their marvelous Vollbier Dunkel and I got their mixed meat plate, which featured a nice smoky soft sausage. My wife got a great place of Kalterbraten, which we were supposed to share. Luckily, it was so big she couldn’t finish it or I’d have not had the opportunity to eat much of it. I also got their Vollbier Hell and while not quite the dark beer, it was nonetheless tasty. We hope to return soon.

Kalterbraten and Alt Vollbier Hell

We finally got to return after two years. Admittedly, COVID-19 likely made it a longer wait than it was.  It was a nice day and we got to sit outside in their lovely courtyard.  We enjoyed both their Kalterbraten and mixed meat place. My wife was very happy to get their Bratkartofeln again too. Of course, the prime reason to walk there is their marvelous Dunkel.
