Bier-Amt is the late afternoon/evening alter ego of he popular Café Wanderer just next door. Whereas the latter is noted for coffee and cake, a large collection of bottled beer and morning hours, the former is the full-fledged bar with a fine selection of regional beers on tap. Both are very popular due largely to their very atmospheric location at the base of one of the town’s main gates to their medieval wall. People lounge around on foldout chairs provided if you’re lucky enough to snag one.

It’s self service so you have to go into the bar to order as well as find out what is available that day. I actually went into Café Wanderer first and was told by the server that if I wanted beer on tap, it was next door, soon to open. I’d seen some friends drinking great beers at this location so was a bit disappointed when they had two Schanzenbräu beers. I quite like the brewery but was hoping for something different. I went for their Helles first up as I’d only had it once prior. I also got the Cadolzburger Hoppy Lager and wasn’t impressed.

It’s definitely one of the must go-to beer bars in town and I’ll surely return, hopefully to find a better selection for someone looking for something a little more off the beaten path.
