Freudeneck (Fischer-Bräu)

Freudeneck is a cute little village north of Rattelsdorf that is scenically situated on the River Itz, so much like Mürsbach just to its north, accessible not only on scenic trails but also by canoe.  Though not quite as elaborate as its northern neighbor, it is nonetheless a nice stop, especially if exploring the river. For those not able to do the short portage or lacking the time or energy to canoe to Mürsbach, it’s an easier and still very nice alternative. Conveniently, there is a brewery in this village, as well.

Founded in 1880 and still in the same family, this small local is the center of village life in Freudeneck. It’s a homey place with a small atmospheric Biergarten.  While lacking in trees, it remains green and shady. The menu is simple but good value.

1st visit by canoe

We had only time for a brief stop the first time there. We’d already had a large meal at Sonnen-Bräu in Mürsbach so didn’t eat anything. That didn’t stop us from enjoying a much deserved Helles from an earthen Krug.  We still had a forty-five minute paddle back to Rattelsdorf and we’d had a couple beers at lunchtime so we only had one here. Hope to return in winter to have their coveted Bock.

A tasty meal

After having their Bock at a Strawanza Bock event at Zapfhahn in Bamberg, I made more of an effort to visit this great little brewery. A friend had also mentioned that their beer was greatly improved. If the Bock was any indication, I couldn’t disagree. On this visit, I came hungry and really enjoyed my simple but tasty meal of fried Göttinger with friend potatoes and a fried egg. The Helles Lagerbier was even better than remembered.

I decided to give the Kellerweisse a shot. It would have probably been better to start with it as it was a scorching hot day but it was refreshing nonetheless. I also got a Helles in a glass to see the color. I’ll definitely not wait so long between visits. It’s a great stop and easier enough to get to with the bus during the week.

Bockanstich 2024

I made it to their Bockbieranstich in October 2024 and sat inside with some friends. I later learned that their was a gravity barrel here in the actual Anstich area. It was a lovely Bock nonetheless and great catching up with friends in a warm pub rather than on my own in the cold

I finally got here during Lent for their marvelous Hannerla Dunkles Lagerbier.  It’s a rich dark treat if you time your visit right.
