Hausbrauer Thundorf

Thundorf lies in the Bad Kissingen county of Lower Franconia and was first mentioned in 889, though there evidence of settlement far earlier. It is a small village with only a handful of notable buildings including the lovely Wasserschloss Thundorf.  Built in 1480 after a peasant uprising destroyed the original castle.

Thundorf would be unlikely to draw many tourists if not for their communal brewery which only occasionally holds events open to the public.

History

Hausbrauer Thundorf has a long if interrupted history. Brewing rights were granted in 1446 and first recorded mention of their brewing dates back to 1551. It was utilized as fire station from 1879 to 2000 but the brewery was renovated from 1986 to 1991. They installed a wood-fired oven in 1993. It’s a beautiful old building to behold. Unfortunately, the interior of the brewery was not open during the festival. This isn’t unusual as it takes more manpower but it does make a visit more interesting if you can wander in. Aside from this, it was a super well-run festival.

The venue was lovely with lots of leafy trees and enough overhead cover for rain, which it did a few times. There were confusingly two beer dispensaries, one for their Hausbrauerbier and the Bierloch, for their more Craft Beer oriented Hopfenfengschmäckle but you could get the flagship there too. Along with the ubiquitous Bratwurst/Steaksemmel grill, there was a much better than usual assortment of cold snacks.

a well-organized Fest

Hausbrauer Thundorf beers

I started off with the Hausbrauerbier, which I could have happily drunk all day but did try the Hopfengschmäckle, a top-fermented Pale Ale. The latter was certainly well made but I probably wouldn’t come all this way to drink Craft Beer when such a fine example of traditional communal beer was at hand.

The food

With so many cold snack choices, I was happy to see a mixed plate at a super reasonable price. The quality was exceptional and the bread was fresh. I also got a Bratwurst and finished up with a slice of rhubarb cake, a seasonable delight not to be missed.

excellent food at Hausbrauer Thundorf

Hausbrauer Thundorf holds a great event and I would have to say it’s one of my favorites of the communal breweries so far. I would happily return despite it not being particularly easy to get to. Without a car, you’re looking a a fair walk/cycle in and out. This is due to its remote location and lack of public transportation.

Beers on tap: Hausbrauerbier, Hopfengschmäckle.
