Brauhaus Niederlauer

Brauhaus Niederlauer is located in Niederlauer, a small village nestled in the bucolic rolling hills of the Rhön-Grabfeld county of Lower Franconia. Only 35 km north of Schweinfurt, a 25-minute scenic car trip would bring you to the unassuming hamlet. You can reach it by train via Burglauer and it’s only a 2.5 km walk from there. Though it’s easier to reach than many of the Franconian communal breweries, it is nonetheless hard to visit. Their annual festival is your best bet.

The history of Brauhaus Niederlauer:

Founded in the late 1800s, Brauhaus Niederlauer is one of the more easily reached communal breweries in Lower Franconia. According to a friend, it is manned entirely by volunteers including a former professional brewer. They only brew once a year for the festival and send the beer to another brewery for lagering and kegging.

Brauhaus Niederlauer Brauhausfest 2025

This was the first Franconian communal brewery Fests I went to entirely on my own. My usual cohorts were out the area or at harder to get to events on this hot summer day. I picked it as the walk was relatively short. It was quite hot so I went early to avoid the heat as much as possible. It was quite empty due to this but I was more than happy to finally try their Lauertaler Urstoff.

They had a few change-ups from the usual Fest fare food-wise but gyros and curry wurst are not really my favorites. So, I stuck with Bratwurst and must say, it was not in the league with those I’d had in Thüringen or the Coburg area. They had a huge array of cakes which made me miss my wife as she’s decided not to come up last minute. Still, I was happy to make the effort to get to Niederlauer and the walk out was one of the best parts of it.

Beers: Lauertaler Urstoff.
