Biergarten auf Unterer Brücke

Unterer Brücke
96049 Bamberg

Bamberg station 2 km

Opening hours: Closed after one season.

There’s been a ton of debate about this venture from the Landwinkl owner but I wanted to be objective, at least from a tourist’s point of view. The bridge has been a gathering place for locals for many years. They bring their own beverages and hang out, enjoying the admittedly great view. There has been talk of it getting unruly in recent years. I imagine those cases are not typical but surely are problematic. There is probably a trash problem with people leaving their empties and it’s likely loud at times. I can sympathize with those who enjoy it and try to keep in orderly and clean but I can also see it from a tourist perspective, where you want to enjoy an empty bridge. Of course, an empty bridge will only be had early in the morning and that’s been the case since Bamberg was “discovered.”

 the view & the new

The city has claimed lack of staff to keep things under control and in steps the Landwinkl owner to “save the day” and surely make a few bucks. There is now a small “Biergarten” of sorts set up and they are in charge of cleaning up. Since all the prime spots are taken, you can’t really just sit on the bridge anymore.

Landwinkl beers are served

I had heard of it but wasn’t overly interested. I’ll have to admit there aren’t as many waterfront drinking places as you might imagine a town as tourist-oriented as Bamberg would have. I was wandering around one day, kind of waiting for my train home. It was gorgeous out and was enjoying the town and weather. I quite naturally wound up on the bridge and decided to take advantage of the benches and noticed they had the Landwinkl Helles on tap. I’d been to the new brewpub once but it’s not a place I’ll probably go to much so figured I could try another one of their beers and sit outside. I won’t likely wind up back here all that often but I may stop to try their Rauchbier as I find the pub’s hours inconvenient. It will never be a regular stop but I won’t boycott it either.

For those with limited time in the Beer Mecca, there are too many great places to go to waste a beer here. Of course, if sitting on the bridge drinking a beer floats your boat, by all means enjoy.

Beers: Landwinkl a hells, Landwinkl a rauchigs on tap.
