Maroldsweisach is a pleasant enough village located in the rolling hills of the Haßberg area and while there are surely some German tourists who come to enjoy the abundant nature nearby, it’s unlikely the English speaking set would stumble upon it unless on a beery pilgrimage to the unassuming but much beloved Brauerei Hartleb.

Founded around 1530 and in the same family since 1920, it’s atmospherically located in a half-timbered building. It has a small but lovely Biergarten with its fair share of red chestnut trees. The interior is refurbished but a bit of a letdown compared to the exterior and seating out front.

Brauerei Hartleb inside & out
No worries about where you sit, you’ll be treated to a highly coveted brew which defines süffig and draws both locals and those who travel just to drink this quaffable nectar. On Sundays, they offer large lunch roasts and at other times, house-butchered meats are prominently featured. We were there on a Saturday afternoon and enjoyed their mixed meat plate. It complimented their easy drinking brew well.

It’s not the best situated village for visiting by public transportation but thankfully they do offer overnight accommodation, something you might want to consider as their beer is a deceptive 5.8%! I certainly am hoping to do this as our visit was all too brief and I’d like to try their Sunday roasts too.
Beers: Vollbier.
