Wilde Rose History

Founded in 1760, Wilde Rose Bräu was completely destroyed in WWII and was rebuilt and reopened in 1953. Unfortunately, brewing ceased in 1971. Various breweries contract brewed their recipes from Maisel’s Bamberg to Franken Bräu Lorenz Bauer but things have shifted to Brauerei Trunk in Vierzehnheiligen. Most feel it’s been improved with this latest development. While the preferred place to sample the Wilde Rose beers would be their lush atmospheric Keller, the old Inn has overnight accommodation and excellent food.

finally a beer at the Wilde Rose Restaurant

Wilde Rose beer

I’ve been to the Wilde Rose Keller many times. I have always enjoyed both the food and beer nearly as much as the admittedly stellar setting. I’d also walked by this restaurant a fair amount of times. Since it’s closed in summer, I guess it didn’t look so enticing but I finally decided to give it a shot for lunch during the antique market Sunday. I was promptly told that without a reservation, I could just turn back around. So, we ate elsewhere and returned for a couple of beers.

The Pils was decent but had a touch of butter. My friend said the Kellerbier was excellent so I got that as my second beer. It generally comes in a ceramic mug but I noticed quite a few people with glass logo mugs. I asked if it was also the Kellerbier and was told it was a Radler. Needless to say, I requested the glass and it took forever to pour as it they had to change the keg. Worse was the keg wasn’t cold and the beer, while much better than the Pils, was still less than ideal.

a bad twist of fate

While not a smashing success of a first visit and it certainly will never replace the Keller for me, I would return to have a meal as everything looked great and I’m sure getting a warm beer won’t be a common occurrence. I might even give the Pils another shot to see if it was just all bad luck that day.

a great lunch at Wilde Rose

Wilde Rose food

I made it back more quickly than I had planned and was very happy with my first meal at Wilde Rose. I’d eyed up their Rostklöße on the menu when there. They make this by cutting up left over dumplings and frying them, generally with eggs. It’s an excellent cheap meal which is growing increasingly rare. The Kellerbier was in perfect form and one of the best non-smoke beers in town.

a 2nd visit before the summer closing

Since the restaurant closes in summer, I rushed back with my wife in hopes of her getting to try their Rostklöße only to find it not on the menu. Their incredible Bauern Schnitzel filled in nicely. With their Keller set to reopen on April 23, 2025 it’s likely the restaurant will be closed until autumn.

Beers: Wilde Rose Kellerbier, Vierzehnheiligen Nothelfer Bio-Weisse, Wilde Rose Pils and amazingly enough,  Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen all on tap.
