Spezial Keller is set on one of Bamberg’s many hills. Though many miss this area, the Stephanburg is one of the town’s true highlights in summer. It’s not one you’d likely choose to climb if you weren’t interested in checking out the Bierkellers. Once you do, you’ll be glad you made the effort. The fine citizens of the town sure do in fine weather. Add to that great views over Bamberg and big leafy trees. It’s a recipe for a great summer day. The Spezial Keller has the same great beer as its namesake brewery in town and great food, too.

In winter months, there’s a cozy restaurant popular with the weekend lunch crowd. I stopped up there the last time in town for a quick Bock in the busy, if cold, outside standing area.

I finally made it to their Sunday Jazz Brunch when showing friends visiting from the US some of our favorite spots in Franconia. If you’re there on a good weather Sunday in summer, it’s a great way to start your day.

Bockanstich 2025
After many years of missing this much beloved Bockanstich, I finally made it in 2025. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to go up early and only had time for one of the great Spezial Bocks. I then rushed off to another Bockanstich in Hirshaid. You could see they were expecting huge crowds but it looked well set up for it. Snacks looked great but I’d had a large lunch before.
