Founded in 1863 and still in the Ochsener family, the actual brewery is just south of town and is a fairly large industrial affair. The family began its reign in Ochsenfurt and the surrounding area with the acquisition of various inns beginning in 1798. Ankerbräu was one of them which became Privatbrauerei Ochsener in the 1960s. They kept the name of the traditional inn, Zum Anker, in homage and to maintain tradition.

Unfortunately on my recent summer visit, the brewpub interior was closed to I didn’t get to see it but the Biergarten was lovely, as was the weather.  It was one of the reasons I chose it over Gasthof Kauzen for lunch. I started off with their Premium Pils and it was very refreshing and a great aperitif.

tasty Premium Pils hit the spot in their lovely Biergarten

I had a very tasty “Ankerbraten,” which was roast pork with lots of caraway. I paired this with their Schwarzbier, the second reason I’d chosen Zum Anker. The beer is also used in the rich sauce.

Schwarbier goes well with dark sauce made with it

I’d like to return in winter to enjoy the pub interior. I’m sure this meal would really hit the spot on a cold day.

Beers: Pils, Schwarzbier & Hefeweizen on tap. Bottled Dunkelweizen, alcohol free Pils & Hefeweizen.

Beer calendar:
