Ahörnla Holy Smoke
Brewery: Ahörnla Bräu
Town: Bamberg
Style: Helles Rauchbier 5.2%
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, creamy, formidable
Nose: hint of smoke, light hops
Body: medium
Palate: hoppy, very light smoke
Finish: lingering, semi-bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: Lively unfiltered Helles Rauchbier with a formidable lasting head and a hint of smoke in the nose. It’s mostly hoppy and I guessed balanced enough. The smoke is overpowered but I guess they were looking for a beer for the non-rauchbier fan. The lingering finish is somehow a touch sticky despite the lingering bitterness. Oddly soapy too.
Next beer or back to the beer list.

I'm an American living in Munich and Bamberg. Why? Well, I came for the beer but stayed for the girl. I'm very happily married to a German woman. Of course, the bonus of great beer certainly doesn't hurt. An avid love of hiking and finding new beers has led me to found Beerwanderers, an information resource on beer hiking trails in Franconia with an emphasis on Franconian food specialties and the endless variety of amazing beer the region is renowned for. I also published my first book Beer Hiking Bavaria which features 50 beer hikes in Bavaria and lead beer hiking experiences for those who love beer & nature. View all posts by beerwanderers
Soapy? Wurghh. Not the glass perhaps?
Haha. Not impossible I guess but there were no bubbles clinging to the glass, a sign of being dirty (generally fat) or soap being on the surface. Even without the soapy quality, which may have just been the hops, it just wasn’t all that good. With Schlenkerla in one direction and The Pelikan in the other, I only stop because it’s my job. 😉
