Schmitt-Bräu Urstoff
Brewery: Schmitt-Bräu (contract brewed by Günther Bräu)
Town: Burgunstadt
Style: Altfränkisches Lager 5.3%
Color: amber
Head: white, creamy
Nose: malty, light grain
Body: medium
Palate: balanced, malty, light grain, underlying hops, hint of roast
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, semi-bitter
Served: on tap at the brewery
Impression: The Urstoff is another Schmitt-Bräu beer but brewed at Günther Bräu in Burgunstadt according to one of their old recipes. This was the case before brewing resumed on a limited scale in 2023. This is more in the Altfränkisch mold with an amber hue but similar creamy head and grainy nose. While amply malty, it’s more balanced overall without being particularly hoppy. The finish is a tad drier and makes for a beer I’d be more likely to session on.
