Impression: I finally found the Reh Altfränkisch Landbier dunkel on tap, in Nürnberg at a cute little quasi Biergarten in a quirky neighborhood a short U-Bahn trip from the main station. Nicely poured but a tad cold with a lovely chestnut hue and off white creamy head. Roasted malt nose is subdued but palate is unmistakably Reh with a nice mix of grain and hops that shine but don’t take over. Roasted malt is similarly restrained as is typical of a style losing popularity. The lingering finish is just dry enough and as it warms, the hops give it a moreish bittersweet aspect.
