Kanone Zwickel
Brewery: Kanone
Town: Schnaittach
Style: Zwickel
Color: unfiltered golden
Head: white, creamy (chiffon-like in bottle)
Nose: malty, grainy
Body: medium
Palate: malty, grainy, underlying hops
Finish: lingering, semi-dry (bottle more bitter)
Served: on tap at Balkon in Nürnberg
Impression: I’d had a fair Dunkles from Kanone at the Nürnberg Festival a few years ago so I was happy to see this Zwickel from them at Balkon. It’s a little maltier than I expect in the style but not cloying. It’s brewed with Herkules and Mandarina hops but evidently not prominently so. The lingering finish is semi-dry but could use a dose of bitterness to keep me happy. The bottle was hoppier and more balanced with more bitterness in the finish. The hop varieties were more obvious a well.

I’ve walked right by that place several times. Most recently this past January when we left the train station and walked through that area just to check it out post Christmas but didn’t stop. Wasn’t so seedy with the cold weather but definitely lots of tourists. I noticed for first time today you have nearly 1200 beer reviews on the site. You have been able to try that many? I’m jealous.
It’s worth stopping in and yes I have been very lucky but also relentless in my pursuit of those beers. Thanks for checking up on my progress. I have probably close to 50 more already in the can so stay tuned.
