Hönicka Bräu Zoigl on tap

unfiltered amber beer in logo mug
Hönicka Zoigl

Brewery: Hönicka Bräu Wunsiedler
Style: “Zoigl”

Color: unfiltered amber

Head: off-white, creamy, rocky
Nose: light grain, hops

Body: medium

Palate: balanced, malty, faint grain, light hops
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, semi-bitter

Served: on tap at Kösseinehaus in the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park

Impression: While I completely understand that Zoigl is a beer culture rather than a beer style, it’s perhaps understandable that breweries close to the Zoigl epicenter want to market unfiltered beers as Zoigl rather than just calling them Kellerbier. I actually don’t see it listed on the Hönicka website and it’s not impossible that it is indeed their Kellerbier, perhaps sold as Zoigl on tap. Otherwise, it’s not bottled and only sold on tap, quite possibly exclusively at the Kösseinehaus.  At any rate, this was a gorgeous looking beer with a light hop/grain nose and balanced malty palate with both grain and hops. The lingering finish was semi-dry with a light bitterness.

Next beer or back to the beer list.
