Scherdel Premium Pilsner

golden beer with big head in glass with bottle
Scherdel Premium Pilsner

Brewery: Scherdel
Style: Pils 4.9
Color: golden

Head: white
rocky, chiffon-like
Nose: grainy, hoppy
Body: medium
Palate: balanced, dry, hoppy, ligh grain

Finish: clean, semi-dry, semi-bitter

Served: from a bottle bought in Bayreuth

Impression: I hadn’t really considered the “other” Hof brewery. With a Kulmbacher takeover in 2003 due to insolvency, Meinels seemed everyone’s favorite but I saw this Pils and decided to give it a chance. Gorgeous pour with a impressive head and lightly hoppy nose mixed with grain. The balanced palate is more of the same, dry and hoppy but balanced. The clean finish is textbook for the style. My wife is from Saxony, where Pils is king. We drive through Hof all the time on the way to visit her family. It’s right on the border so it shouldn’t be surprising that this is their chosen beer. I can see why.

Next beer or back to the beer list.

  1. Although I can’t claim to have drunk their beer, I have been to Hof three times for other reasons. The third time, I saw a brilliant opera performance at their city theater.

    1. Drive by Hof a lot, on the way to Doreen’s family in Saxony but only been in town (well, the brewery) twice. Too far from Munich for a day trip and too close to her Mom’s to spend the night!
