Impression: Schlüsselfeld isn’t the easiest place to get to and though I’ve managed to make it to the brewery’s pub a couple of times, I’d not been as lucky with their lovely Bierkeller. I found it closed the first time in town and in the interim, it’s gone down to being only open Sunday afternoons. I finally got there in August 2023 with a long local bus from Bamberg. I got to town far before the Keller opened but there’s only one bus out and one back on Sundays so I didn’t have much choice. I had a nice lunch at the former brewery Schwarzer Adler and even stopped in the Stern-Bräu pub for a quick pint before venturing out to my main destination. It was interesting to contrast the Vollbier at the pub to the gravity dispense version at the Keller.   In  either form, the Vollbier is a great dry hoppy brew with a clean bitter finish but can be a touch fizzy for my taste at the pub. At the Keller, the intriguing mix of hops and grain mingle well with the dry fruitiness to make for one of the nicest Kellerbiers I’ve had. It’s one you could drink all day and the Keller itself is a real gem. If using the bus, you’ll have about three hours to enjoy.
