Nothhaft Antonius Starkbier Hell
Brewery: Nothhaft
Town: Marktredwitz
Style: Dopplebock hell 7.5%
Color: deep golden to light amber
Head: white, creamy
Nose: rich malt, a touch of honey, alcohol
Body: full
Palate: richly malty, honey, alcohol
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, bittersweet
Served: from a bottle bought locally
Impression: I’d enjoyed the Dunkel version of their Starkbier so didn’t hesitate to pick this up. This is one rich contemplative brew and glad they had the sense to label it a Doppelbock. While traditionally Doppelbock has been dark, there is a growing trend for lighter ones. As alcohol levels rise in Bocks, the distinction has blurred but the richness of this one makes it clear it’s not just the strength or color that makes a beer a Doppelbock. All that said it’s not as good as the dark one in this case.
