Impression: Though their website says they have a Rotbier of their own, I noticed they had Schanzenbräu’s on their physical menu after I’d ordered it. The bartender said they used to have a Rotbier and now only have a Helles. It’s a shame as this would have been a much better than anticipated comparison if this was theirs! Went downstairs to talk to the brewer and he said not only do they still brew a Rotbier but it’s on now. Went up and bartender apologized and gave me a free small one. It’s a bit darker and totally unfiltered with a less pronounced nose. It’s not as integrated with a few loose cloying elements. It would have likely fared better if I’d not been given the Schanzenbräu Rotbier first. It’s definitely a notch or two below it. Still, not a bad beer and I’d stop in for the Helles next time in town.
