Schwan Weihnactsbock
Brewery: Schwan
Town: Burgebrach
Style: Hellerbock 6.9%
Color: deep golden
Head: white, creamy
Nose: richly malty, light grain
Body: full
Palate: balanced, richly malty, some grain, underlying hops, touch of butter
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, very slightly bitter
Served: from a bottle bought in Bamberg
Impression: I’d had this on tap under less than ideal circumstances, after the Zehendner Bockbieranstich a few years ago but still found it a decent Hellerbock considering the competition. It’s not likely I’ll get out there this Bock season so was happy to find a bottle in Bamberg. Though there is some butter in the mix, it seems to integrate it well and I found it pleasant enough. Still not something to particularly strive for.
