Penning Kräusen

unfiltered dark golden beer in pewter lidded mug with bottle
Penning Kräusen

Brewery: Penning Zeissler
Town: Hetzelsdorf

Style: Kräusen 5%
Color: unfiltered deep golden to amber
Head: off-white, sudsy
Nose: fruity, floral hops, some apricot

Body: medium, soft
Palate: fruity, citrus hops
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, bitter

Served: from a bottle bought in the area

Impression: Though I’ve generally liked the seasonal beers I’ve got from Penning, they often taste a little similar. Not so with this Kräusen, which is the hoppiest beer I’ve ever had from them. It’s also lighter in color than most of their beers and more aromatic. Fruity in both the nose and palate, the citrus hops are present from the start and last well into the finish. I quite like the flavor and dryness but I’d prefer the finish to be a notch less bitter. That said, I’d buy it again and it’s sure to be popular with the new craft beer enthusiasts finally forming in Franconia. It’s a nice mix of traditional and the new wave.
