Landwehr Jahrgangsbier Fränkisches Braunbier

Landwehr Jahrgangsbire Fränkisches Braunbier

Brewery: Landwehr-Bräu
Town: Reichelshofen (Steinsfeld)

Braunbier 4.9%
Color: light brown

Head: off-white

Nose: malty, hint of caramel

Body: medium

Palate: balanced, malty, hint of caramel, slight roast, underlying hops

Finish: lingering, semi-dry, bitter

Served: from a bottle bought in the area

Impression: I was afraid this would be too malty after the rather hoppy Huppendorfer Export but this is surprisingly bitter for the style. It’s evidently cold hopped with Spalter Perle and the experiment is less than successful. It’s slightly thin body-wise and have to say less than well-integrated in flavor. It doesn’t seem to know where it wants to go and I’d say it needed a lot more malt to make this more of a Festbier and to balance out the bitterness. I’ve had the Dunkles on tap and thought it was decent but I can see why many slag the brewery off if this one is more typical. Definitely an odd bitterness as it warms.
