Elch-Bräu 1.21 Gigawatt Doppelbock Dunkel

dark beer in glass with bottle
Elch-Bräu 1.21 Gigawatt

Brewery: Elch-Bräu
Style: Dunkler Doppelbock
deep chestnut
tan, creamy
richly malty, hint of dark chocolate, some coffee
Body: medium

malty, coffee, dark chocolate
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, bittersweet

Served: from a bottle bought in the area

Impression: A little unimpressive on the pour with a less than ample head. That said, it’s creamy and lasting. Fair coffee and dark chocolate in the nose and palate. The lingering finish is bittersweet and though it lacks something, not cloying for 8%. It’s just a bit thin and somehow reminds me of a Baltic Porter more than a Doppelbock despite the alcohol content.

Next beer or back to the beer list.

    1. I’m always looking for a big head for Instagram, Jason. I pour right into the glass, not down the side as is customary. It also cuts down on the fizz, making it easy to drink more beer. Beers like Schlenkerla produce massive heads with this method and take quite long to pour. I have time for multiple pictures. With this beer, this was the very first picture. Subsequent shots show a smaller head. That said, it didn’t entirely disappear and in beers of this strength, it’s not uncommon.
