Schlenkerla Stiftsgartenbier

Town: Bamberg
Style: Festbier 5.7%

rich malt, light smoke, Spalter hops

Palate: balanced, richly malty, lightly smoky, underlying hops
Finish: lingering

Served: from a bottle bought at the brewery

Impression: Brewed according to an old recipe from Bamberg’s oldest historical if long closed brewery on Michaelsberg, this rich amber brew is yet another winner from Heller Bräu, better known as Schlenkerla. Though not brewed with smoked malt, it retains some residual pleasant smokiness in both the nose and palate due to the yeast not being washed. Hopped with both Bamberger and Spalter hops, it has a nicely balanced bitterness offset by ample malting, resulting in slightly stronger brew at 5.7%. The lingering finish is a fine mix of all these components, making for a moreishly drinkable session beer, dangerous with the elevated alcohol.
