Friedrich Hauf 1901 Dunkel
Brewery: Hauf
Town: Dinkelsbühl
Style: Dunkles
Color: chestnut
Head: off-white, rocky
Nose: grainy, hoppy
Body: medium
Palate: malty, some chocolate, hint of roast
Finish: lingering, semi-dry, bittersweet
Served: on tap at Den Wilden Mann
Impression: Good looking Dunkel and nice to see it still on tap despite its lack of popularity. Once this generation of older women dies out, it will too. It’s a shame as even though it’s not as dry as their other beers, it’s certainly not sweet in the least. It’s got a nice chocolatey note which smoothes into the moreish bittersweet finish. Less so as it warms but still true enough to form to be appreciated.
